The origin of Thanksgiving goes all the way back to the beginning of American history. The famous 1620, the Mayflower, arrived with 102 pilgrims who could not bear religious persecution in Britain. The 1620 and 1621 winter, they encountered unimaginable difficulties, in the cold and hunger, when the winter passed, only 50 immigrants survived. At this time the good-hearted Indians brought the immigrants the necessities of life, but also specially sent to teach them how to hunt, fish and grow corn, pumpkin. With the help of the Indians, the settlers finally got a good harvest. On the day of the harvest celebration, according to religious traditions and customs, the settlers set a day to thank God and decided to thank the Indians for their sincere help by inviting them to celebrate the festival together.
On the first Thanksgiving, the Indians and the settlers gathered, fired cannons at dawn, marched into a house that served as a church, gave a pious thank-you to God, and then lit a bonfire for a grand feast, turning the turkey they had hunted into a delicacy and feasting on the Indians.
The next day and the third day there were wrestling, running, singing, dancing and other activities. The first Thanksgiving was a great success. Many of these celebrations have survived for more than 300 years. European immigrants to the United States largely followed the pattern of the first Thanksgiving celebrations on the North American continent.
In 1789, the first president of the United States, Washington, officially designated November 26 as the first national thanksgiving. For a long time, however, states set their own dates. It wasn't until 1863 that President Lincoln again declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.
In 1941, Congress passed a Franklin Delano Roosevelt Bill declaring the fourth Thursday of November a National Thanksgiving Day. The Thanksgiving holiday usually lasts from Thursday to Sunday.
